I have owned a Mk 4 Diesel estate for 2 years now and covered over 50k miles in it. It was cheap to buy and os cheap to run and the only thing i have replaced on it is a battery and one heater plug and a clutch. For £300 it has been the best and most reliable car i have ever bought. I know on a G plate it is getting on a bit but i am reluctent to get rid of it.
hi, i've just bought a 1.6i cabriolet, pick it up saturday & i cant wait! once i test drove it last wkend i knew i had to have it. i was wondering if any one could tell me what to expect performance wise or any other advice? This will be a change from driving my 1.2 nova i've had for the past 2yrs!!!
i got a Mk4 Eclipse 1.3, reliable cheap to run but the ohv engines rattle pretty bad. buy one though, 151,000 and still going, 1.4 cvh engine so much better though, cant really tell its on and the insurance isnt that much worse. had a 1.4lx, bewst car i ever had until some convertable bmw wrote it off. rich b**tards
I own a 1987 XR3i. Previous owners have bashed it, burnt it...
Still is a great car. 1.6i gives a hell of a thrust on highways, but it does get too hot driving in a city. I've had to change a lot of things: exhaust tube, battery...
Last week the clutch started squeeking, so I guess that'll be next. I'm trying to do it my self, just for fun. Does anybody know of a guide of some sort just in case it gets too complicated. If you find/have anything about this, please mail me (info at reven dot org).
If you can get a cheap 1.6 or 1.8 XR3i without too much km, buy it and have fun.
i have a mk4 xr with modded engine, apart from the crap gearbox this is an rs beater, and im sick ov racing all the new saxo's and novas cos they cant take the pace unless they have a rocket up there arse
i picked up a g plate xr3i recently for £50,despite lying unused for two years it started first turn of the key after being jumpstarted, apart from small niggles, one caliper pat seized, petrol pipe rusted through, tail light connections needing cleaned up,i was qiut pleased with it but as the car was bought for trackdays it was found to be too slow on the straights i decided to get something quicker, but this was brought forward by myself rolling it at the track, nonetheless while it lasted it was good fun and the best £50 i have spent in a long time dont be put off buying a cheap one as a runner as you could do a lot worse.
Sorry GreaseMonkey, do your research... Mk4 from '86 onwards... I have an '87 Mk4 XR3i convertible, and I wouldn't recomment one to someone who isn't handy with a spanner... had it six months, apart from the standard service bits it's had new piston rings, new gearbox and a new camshaft. The interior bits are really hard to get hold of now and quite a lot of the plastic bits are starting to deteriorate with age. Drives really well, grips corners nicely and is a cheap cabriolet(which is nice!). Could be cheaper on fuel, but I guess it wasn't as expensive then! Better get those overalls on if you want one of these!
Sorry but the mrk4 escort is from 1990 onwards the car u are all talking about is a late mrk3. I have a 1.3 L which in all honesty is a bag of s*** but it has never broken down on me and for the money it holds the road like like a race car - you can go absoulty flat out and it will never let you down - Ideal first car if only the insurance wasn't so high due to the fact that in most situations it is easyer to get in to the thing with out the keys!
XR3I - this has been an excellent car, never broken down on me, only a rear wheel bearing worn. The acceleration is good for the size of the engine, replaced cam with a standard ford one, as the car had done high mileage - what a difference, would recommend to anyone, truly excellent cars as long as they havent been thrashed by boy racers
I bought my 1.6 for £20, yes £20, there were some problems with it, but I still got it home, 70 miles, so far spent £50 fixing it and there is a massive difference
I bought a H reg Eclipse for £23 of a work mate. A further £600.00 was spent to bring it upto scratch. Performance was so so (Had a Carlton GSI before)and the economy was pretty good. Too small for a family so it was taken off the road and now sits up the drive. I added clear front indicators, white dials and XR3 alloys and a few other bits. It is finished in the metalic blue and still looks a good looking car. Sure to be a classic of the future!
My XR3I has been totally reliable, it is quick for a 1.6, although at motorway speeds it can be a bit noisy, saying that though you never have to change out of fifth, only for the most severe hills. An excellent car thats still quick today, quicker than the 1.6 and 1.8 zetec escorts
My XR3i cost £600 6 months ago. i love it, looks wicked, but...... reliability is shocking. i am an amateur rally driver, so i do tend to thrash it, but it's cost me nearly £1600 in second hand parts... two clutches, gearbox, seals gaskets piston rings, belts, starter motor, battery, exhaust, alternator, distributor, coil, plugs, radiator, interior stuff, electrics, rust in places. and it still stalls at traffic lights every so often. however, it's now got a sierra cossy rear whale tail on it. sweet car.
my escort 1.4 cost £200 and is excellent, it purrs like a kitten when at the lights a roars like a tiger pulling away! your thrown into your seat, and by the time your sitting back up your doing about 40mph just a couple of seconds later!
I paid £1300(Orion 1.4), after 6 months, 7000 miles, NO mainenance, sold for £1100. Never really let me down except damp in the distributor (easily solved with kitchen roll)
